On-site radiologist coverage linked to faster emergency CT reporting - Radiology Business

A recent retrospective study has found that CT interpretations in emergency departments have significantly longer turnaround times (TATs) when readings are conducted off-site. The study, which analyzed 13,533 emergency CT exams over a year, indicated that the absence of on-site radiologists could increase TATs by up to 34%. The median reporting time without on-site coverage was 81 minutes, compared to 58 minutes with it. The study highlights the importance of having on-site radiologist availability for timely emergency CT interpretations, particularly for more complex exams. The findings suggest that staffing models may need to be reevaluated, particularly considering the varying impact on different types of CT scans. However, the authors emphasize that the study is observational and does not establish a direct causal relationship between on-site coverage and reporting times.
